Spanish tanners Incusa won the Best New Materials Technology sector of the 'Best of APLF Awards' held in Hong Kong earlier this year. Cited as the reason for the company's success was their ability to take a theory that has been around for a long time - the titanium tanning process and adapt it to crate a commercially viable non-toxic anti-allergenic leather.
Contributing Editor (and one of the 'Best of APLF Awards' judges) Mike Redwood observes, "Finding a new way to tan leather has long been the quest of tanners and most that we see today are re-introductions of old ideas with a new twist or doubtful items claimed as "chrome free" or "organic." Creating a new leather which actually meets the demands of the both the modern consumer and the leather using industries is a real achievement."
Incusa, a boutique tannery in the Spanish city of Valencia, have done this with their Sanotan leather. This leather is anti-allergic, dyes easily with bright colours, can be made waterproof for up to 30 minutes, and is perfectly suited for footwear, leather goods and accessories. This is a leather which is perfect for uses such as boat shoes, watchstraps, orthopedic and industrial footwear. Plus anyone with an interest in looking at leathers with an environmental story.
This is because with Sanotan leathers Incusa have perfected and commercialised all the best knowledge on titanium tanning. Titanium is strong, lightweight, skin and body friendly and an abundant material to tan with. As noted above it is anti-allergenic and tannery wastes contained in it are not harmful but can do positive good. It is a revolutionary approach to traditional hand crafted leathers perfect for designers in all fields.
